Laparoscopic Fibroid Removal

Uterine fibroids also called as leiomyomas or myomas is abnormal growth of connective tissues or muscles in or on the uterus. Sometimes these tumours become bulky and large in size or number causing discomfort and heavy flow during periods. In general, uterine fibroids are non-cancerous in nature and mostly occur during childbirth age.

If these fibroids are more in number or bulky in size they may lead to severe pain in pelvic region, abnormal and heavy bleeding during periods and unnecessary pressure on bladder or bowel. Therefore, it is better to get them removed, and for this Laparoscopic or robotic myomectomy fibroid removal is done. Both these are minimal invasive procedure, in which tiny incisions are made in abdomen through which lighted tube (scope) and specialised instrument are inserted and fibroids are removed. This procedure in less complicated, not as painful as open surgery and recovery is fast.

There are two options available for Laparoscopic fibroid removal:

  • Laparoscopic or Robotic Myomectomy, in this procedure fibroid are removed without disturbing the uterus. This surgery is generally done when fibroid growth is noticed outside the uterus. As uterus is left intact, so there are chances that the woman can conceive without any issue.
  • Laparoscopic or Robotic Hysterectomy, in this procedure the uterus needs to be removed while removing fibroids. This procedure is done for women who don’t wish to get pregnant in future or don’t want to preserve their uterus.
